Joyful Voices of Inspiration concert, Sanctuary

Joyful Voices of Inspiration is a community based gospel choir under the direction of James A. Early, an accomplished musician, educator, and acclaimed recipient of the the New England Conservatory Gospel Music Award.  The choir seeks to promote appreciation of gospel music as a powerful inspirational medium and uniquely American art form based on rich history and tradition in this country.  Since its inception in 1999, the choir has performed at many Greater Boston and New England area churches, concerts and civic events.  They have toured Italy, France, Ireland, Holland and Brazil.  Joyful Voices of Inspiration is pleased to be welcomed back to First Parish again this year!

Craigville Retreat

An annual tradition at First Parish Church is to reconnect after our summer apart by coming together at Craigville Conference Center on the Cape the weekend following Labor Day.  It's a relaxing, fun-filled time for singles, couples, and families.  Enjoy the beach; play tennis, bocce, softball; picnic on the conference center grounds; play board games; facilitate a workshop/session of interest to you; experience the first service of the new church year in the rustic old tabernacle; share meals; star gaze over the amazing Atlantic Ocean; etc.  If you have never participated, feel free to contact me for details.

Motion Choir

Dance has a long history as a spiritual expression. Globally, it knows no boundaries and belongs to all cultures. From biblical times, dance in conjunction with music or percussive beats has been part of worship. Just as we include music in our worship services, we are now starting to include movement. Liturgical dance is movement set to hymns or songs which are appropriate for worship services, or movement which accompanies readings. It is primarily simple, coordinated gestures and, while helpful, no dance experience is required.  All shapes, sizes, genders, and ages are welcome.

Will start again in September, 2008

Spirituality Reading and Study Group

This reading and study group is focused on a variety of the literature of spirituality. We will begin with a discussion of pages 3 to 38 of John Buehrens' "Understanding the Bible: An Introduction for Skeptics, Seekers, and Religious Liberals" as well as some selections from the Gospel of Thomas and the Tao Te Ching. Both the Gospel of Thomas and the Tao Te Ching are aphoristic in nature and will not take long to read. We expect to continue initially with Buehrens' book but future readings will be selected by those participating.

Location: Harrington Room

Facilitators:  Morgan Wilson and Meredith Ruland
