Annual Flower Communion service

On June 13, we will gather for our last worship service before “recessing” for the summer.  Unitarians of a certain age are fond of saying that God gives UU's the summer off for good behavior!  In any case, the final service on June 13 will be a fine time to wish one another well at the start of summer travels and time off.  The First Parish Choir will join us and we will celebrate the time honored tradition called the Flower Communion.  You are invited to bring a flower to share — it can be a flower from your garden or a small inexpensive bouquet from the grocery store.  Upon entering the Sanctuary, each person places her or his flower in vases up by the chancel.  We will bless them during the ceremony and reflect on the flowers’ symbolism.  At the end of the service, each of us brings home a flower other than the one that we brought with us.

Annual congregational meeting

All active church members are strongly encouraged to attend the Annual Meeting scheduled for Sunday, June 13, after the service.  Your presence (and your voting) at the annual meeting directly influence the composition of the Board of Managers, the funding of the church’s annual budget, and what issues the church will focus upon in the upcoming year.  Please make every effort to attend!  Pick up your copy of the Annual Report and an updated church directory in Whitcomb Hall during Coffee Hour. Light lunch and childcare will be provided.

First Parish Annual Picnic

Please plan to attend the First Parish Annual Picnic at Beaver Brook Reservation!

Food Bring your favorite picnic food and maybe a dish to share. Gas grills only if you plan to cook out! Looking for volunteers to bring a couple of grills to share.

Other Things to Bring
Bathing suits for sprinkler park
Water Shoes for exploring Brook and  Sprinkler Park
Towels, Sun Screen and Bug Repellant
Lawn chairs and/or Blankets
Walking Shoes for Letterboxing

Fun Stuff To Do
Explore Beaverbrook. You probably won't find any beavers, but you can find some Crayfish.
Search for a Letterbox. Letterboxing involves following clues to find a hidden Letterbox. Letterboxes contain an autograph book where finders can leave an impression of an ink stamp or sign their names. Most Letterboxes will contain an ink stamp so the finder can collect the impression in their own book. Stamps are usually hand made and relevant to the location of the hiding spot.

Location: Beaver Brook Park

Motion Choir

Dance has a long history as a spiritual expression. Globally, it knows no boundaries and belongs to all cultures. From biblical times, dance in conjunction with music or percussive beats has been part of worship. Just as we include music in our worship services, we are now starting to include movement. Liturgical dance is movement set to hymns or songs which are appropriate for worship services, or movement which accompanies readings. It is primarily simple, coordinated gestures and, while helpful, no dance experience is required.  All shapes, sizes, genders, and ages are welcome.

Location: Chapel

Monthly

Spirituality Reading and Study Group

This reading and study group is focused on a variety of the literature of spirituality.

For 2009-10, we are reading Walden by Henry David Thoreau.

We meet once a month for ten months, reading one chapter each month and discussing the ideas.  This schedule will help us focus more deeply on the material.  And for those of you with a busy life, this is a good way to fit in a spiritual discussion without too much pain.

If you have questions, please contact Meredith Ruland or Morgan Wilson.  If you have a friend who would be interested, they are welcome.  And, please let Meredith Ruland know if you are interested in joining us so you can be added to the list to be notified of what is going on.

Location: Harrington Room

Facilitators:  Morgan Wilson and Meredith Ruland
