Our music program builds upon a long history of excellence, particularly in
the area of classical performance. A 24-voice voluntary choir sings on holidays
and occasional Sundays throughout the church year.
For the remaining Sunday morning services, professional instrumental soloists
collaborate with the Music Director, Rosemary Levy.
Jazz and gospel singing
are recent introductions into our services. And members of the congregation
have begun sharing their musical talants in group and individual performance.
Generations Singers, open to anyone 10 or
over who just enjoys singing, meets in a series of six to eight
weekly sessions, up to 3 times a year, to sing a variety of song and chorus music including shape
note, musicals, folk song and rhythm and blues.
A Hook & Hastings pipe organ and a Steinway grand piano enhance the efforts
of our musicians.
On March 3, 2002, retired music director Larry Phillips donated his harpsichord, which
traveled with him for many public performances, to the church.
And our chancel finds itself an occasional home to dance
and small theatrical presentation as part of Sunday worship.
A Committee on the Arts and Music was formed in 1998 to enhance the cultural
life of the church and the Waltham community. Film nights, performances by
the Wayland Golden Tones and the Geoff Hicks Inspirational Choir, an
afternoon of opera and other song, and various coffeehouse style events have
resulted.
